Wesley Health Care Center to Enhance Resident Activities Program

Saratoga Springs, N.Y., AUGUST 31,, 2016 – In an initiative to enhance and expand its existing Resident Activities Program, Wesley Health Care Center, Inc., part of The Wesley Community, has been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Marjorie Rockwell Fund for the Disabled of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. The grant will fund new equipment and supplies for the program and expand the number of resident trips and activities for the next year.

Wesley Community unveils new renovation

SARATOGA SPRINGS--The Wesley Community unveiled a $6 million dollar renovation to its "Springs" building Monday. The CEO of the company tells us there are a number of different upgrades, all to be more resident-friendly. One of the floors in the nursing home building was completely renovated, and so were the entrance way and downstairs spaces.

Saratoga County chamber's Leap Day kindness leapfrogs country

The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce has dubbed February 29th, Leap of Kindness Day. The thinking: It's an extra day on the calendar, why not use it to help others?

The Wesley Community names new Director of Nursing

The Wesley Community today announced Kimberly Garso has been promoted to Director of Nursing. In her new role, Garso will provide oversight and management of more than 400 clinical and support staff in patient care activities at Wesley Health Care Center.

The Wesley Community to offer new outpatient therapy programs for those with Parkinson’s disease

The Wesley Community today announced five therapists from its Outpatient Therapy program have completed training and received certification in both LSVT Big and LSVT Loud methodologies through funding from an anonymous donor. The certification allows the Wesley Community Outpatient Therapy program to provide new services to those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The renovation to Springs building on Wesley's campus could be complete by March 2016, said Brian Nealon, CEO of the Wesley Community. The project involves full renovations to a residential floor and improvements to the ground floor of the building. The residential floor is designed to invoke a community feel.

Family donates rose garden in celebration of longtime Wesley Community resident turning 100

The Wesley Community today announced it has received a rose garden donated by the family of longtime resident Elsie G.B. Shepherd in honor of her 100th birthday. The Elsie G.B. Shepherd Centennial Rose Garden at The Wesley Community is located in the courtyard of the Hathorn building, part of Wesley Health Care Center.

Leadership Saratoga announces Members of the Class of 2015

Leadership Saratoga, a program of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, announces its twenty-eighth class of participants. The group held its opening retreat on September 28 and 29 at Minnowbrook Conference Center in Blue Mountain Lake. The Leadership Saratoga program selects up to 24 people each year to participate in an intensive nine month training program designed to teach them skills for stronger leadership, group dynamics, and issues facing Saratoga County and area nonprofits.

1st Annual Balloon Walk

Paul Calhoun Sr., 92, recounts parachuting into Normandy on D-Day June 6, 1944 with the 101st parachute infantry, from his residence at Woodlawn Commons Thursday May 29, 2014, in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was wounded and captured by the Germans but managed to escape and aided by French civilians was able to rejoin US forces.

The Wesley Community Fran Cronin promoted to director of volunteer services. Cronin previously served as leisure services director. Jessica Fretto promoted to associate administrator. Fretto recently completed the New York State Department of Health Administrator-in-Training program, during which she rotated through all of the facilities at the community.

The Hovens, both 79, planned to stay in their house in Sidney, Delaware County, for the long term, despite its isolated location. They were puzzled when friends decided to leave their beautiful home for a retirement community.

Presentation on The Burning of The Piping Rock

Last Friday, November 8, the residents at Woodlawn Commons, part of the Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs, had me as their guest to give a presentation on The Burning of The Piping Rock. What a great group they were! Several had been to Piping Rock Casino in its glory days. They discussed how much they enjoyed dancing to the big bands at Piping Rock Casino and watching the hit stars, such as Sophie Tucker, Hildegarde, Kay Thompson and the Williams Brothers. (In those post WW II days, Andy Williams performed as one of the Williams Brothers.) When I showed them this photo of the entertainment revue at Piping Rock Casino, and other photos, they gasped in recognition of those times long ago. Thanks to Gina Mergel for the invitation to speak at Woodlawn Commons!

Lester Earns High Honor

Wesley Community resident Nancy Lester has received the prestigious Frederic J. Resseguie Leadership Award from the Saratoga Regional YMCA. Lester is the fifth person since 1971 and the first woman to receive the award in recognition of outstanding service to the YMCA.

Celebrating 70 years together

April 13, 2013
Omar Herrick, 90, and his wife, Gloria, 87 celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a special dinner on April 10th at The Wesley Community Health Care Center. Originally from Maine, the couple were high school sweethearts who wed in the spring of 1943. A job transfer relocated the couple to South Glens Falls in 1971. After retiring to Tampa, FL for 27 years, the Herricks returned to South Glens Falls in 2009.

Saratoga County resident celebrates 110th birthday

Jennie Pattist was born on March 24th, 1903. That was 9-months before the Wright Brothers took flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. To say Jennie has lived through it all may be an understatement. She was born in South Corinth. Lived on a farm most of her life with John, her husband of 67 years, and had two children and four grandchildren, including her youngest grandchild, Patrick Barton, who is 47.

Malta man honored for model airplane work

January 31, 2013
Henry Haffke likes to fly with his feet on the ground. That’s one of the benefits of being a model aircraft aficionado. The longtime Malta resident was honored Wednesday with a Certificate of Merit from the National Aeronautic Association for his years of designing, researching and writing about model aircraft. Malta Supervisor Paul Sausville presented the award to Haffke at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

BOCES students began as volunteers at Wesley Community Center, ended as friends

It was like Christmas in August at the Wesley Healthcare Center Thursday afternoon. The role of Santa was played by special education students from the F. Donald Myers Education Center.The students walked the halls of the assisted living community handing out bundled gifts, handmade and wrapped by the students during their summer classes at BOCES.

Wesley Hosts Employee Recognition Luncheon

The Wesley Community honored 60 employees who were celebrating five to 35 years of service at a luncheon catered by Longfellows Restaurant in Saratoga Springs on Wednesday, May 23. Gifts were presented by Wesley CEO J. Brian Nealon, Administrator Dutch Hayward and Director of Human Services Leslie Ann Fettinger.

Concert Cheers Clients at Wesley Evergreen Adult Day Services

The clients of Wesley Evergreen Adult Day Services in Ballston Spa, an affiliation of The Wesley Community , were entertained Thursday by Spa Christian Elementary School’s children in grades three to six. An audience of near 20 clients enjoyed an array of Christian songs sung by the children using sign language in addition to spoken lyrics.

Woodlawn Commons Residents Celebrate 69th Wedding Anniversary

Marjorie and Jackson Reynolds were married on March 27, 1943 in Newtonville, MA and moved to Schenectady, NY shortly thereafter. Residing at Woodlawn Commons, within The Wesley Community, since the fall of 2011, they were honored on their 69th anniversary with a party in the great room of the Commons with staff and residents.
